Classic Barn Project

Welcome to The Classic Barn project. This is a work in progress that reflects a deep passion for the icon that is the American barn. Old barns are being dismantled for their antique woods as America looses farm land. New barns are being built from aluminum siding and steel frames. The classic wood barn still survives despite modernization of the farm. We salute those who restore and maintain old barns for the heritage they represent. Better yet, new barns that are built in the old ways and keep the traditions alive. If you ever had the oppertunity to work in and around an old barn, it had not to fall in love with the character and memories that they hold. Aging wood like the American Chestnut, Oaks and Pines have a character thats impossible to recerate. Creeking boards, rusty hinges, cobwebs hanging from the hay loft make an old barn more like an old friend than simply a structure. So this is our mission, to preserve in images the American barn, all shapes and purposes, for future current and future generations to enjoy.

The barn gallery pages contain images and photos of barns that are in themselves a work of art, and record the diversity of design of the last few centuries. From contemporary working barns to those that are pieces of history, the project intends to preserve a photographic record that will last for generations. Photos from North Carolina and Tennessee are featured but all areas of the country are welcome to submit images. To submit images, simply email with photos attached to michael@imountain.net and please list photographers name and location of barn so that we can appropriately list the image.
